Why NOT Traditional Hearing Aids?
Traditional hearing aids often contribute to confusion among individuals seeking treatment for hearing loss. You’ve likely seen ads for traditional hearing aids including, but not limited to: “As Seen on TV” offers, letters in your mailbox, and letters from local retail hearing aid dealers. Without proper education and understanding, you may believe all technologies are created equal. However, they are not!
Other forms of traditional hearing aids that can contribute to the confusion are over-the-counter hearing aids which are still not legal in Canada. Recent legislation in the United States has made the sale of over-the-counter hearing aids available in big box stores and over the internet. These are one-size-fits-all devices that are fit “at home” without a hearing evaluation, and without the medical care provided by a professional team.
Currently, the US Food and Drug Administration has limited their use to only people with mild to moderate hearing loss, although there is no way to regulate this. Fortunately, many states’ Attorney Generals, including Texas, Arizona, Michigan, Ohio, etc., have started to crack down on misleading consumers about the effectiveness of this technology.
