The holidays are full of joy, laughter, and connection—but let’s be honest, they’re also noisy. For someone with hearing loss, the overlapping conversations, clatter of dishes, and holiday music can make gatherings feel overwhelming. However, with a little preparation and the right strategies, you can turn the season into a time of meaningful connection. At Bluewater Hearing & Balance in Sarnia, Ontario, we’re dedicated to empowering those with hearing loss to thrive in every situation.

As an audiologist living with hearing loss, I’ve learned how to navigate these moments both personally and professionally. Here are my top tips for making the most of the holiday season.

Preparation Is Key

Preparation is essential for managing hearing loss during noisy gatherings. Before attending any event, ensure your hearing aids or cochlear implants are in optimal condition. At Bluewater Hearing & Balance, we recommend these steps:

  • Clean Your Hearing Devices: Wipe them down to remove any debris and ensure they’re functioning properly.
  • Check Batteries or Charge: Make sure your devices are fully charged or have fresh batteries before heading out.
  • Test Assistive Devices: Remote microphones and other accessories can be game-changers in loud environments. Test them ahead of time so you’re comfortable using them.
  • Experiment with Live Captioning: Apps and phone settings with live captions are an excellent tool for picking up conversations in noisy environments.

Don’t hesitate to communicate with your loved ones about your needs. For instance, ask the host to turn down background music during dinner or seat you in a quieter area of the table. These small changes can significantly improve your experience.

Strategic Seating Can Transform the Experience

Choosing the right seat at the table can make a world of difference for those with hearing loss. Here’s what to consider:

  • Avoid High-Traffic Zones: Stay clear of noisy areas like the kitchen door, the kids’ section, or near audio speakers.
  • Choose a Central Seat: Sitting in the middle of one side of the table gives you a clear view of everyone’s faces, helping with lip reading and visual cues.
  • Sit Near a Supportive Buddy: Opt to sit next to someone who is patient and willing to summarize conversations. A supportive family member or friend can make the experience more enjoyable.

These adjustments help reduce stress and foster better communication during gatherings.

Fostering Meaningful Connections

The holiday season isn’t about perfection—it’s about connection. Thoughtful preparation, strategic seating, and small environmental changes can help you focus on the laughter and love that truly matter.

At Bluewater Hearing & Balance in Sarnia, Ontario, we understand the challenges that hearing loss can bring to festive moments. Our patient-centered approach ensures you’re equipped with the tools and strategies to enjoy life to the fullest.
